Deliciously Gooey: Mozzarella Stuffed Soft Pretzels Recipe

These Mozzarella Stuffed Soft Pretzels blend chewy, golden-brown dough with a gooey mozzarella center for the perfect indulgent snack or appetizer.

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 10 cups water
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Optional: 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar and salt, stir until dissolved, and let sit for 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Gradually add flour one cup at a time, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
  5. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide into 8 equal pieces.
  8. Roll each piece into a 24-inch rope, flatten, and add mozzarella cheese in the center.
  9. Fold the dough over the cheese and pinch seams to seal.
  10. Shape into pretzels by forming a U shape, crossing the ends over, and pressing them onto the bottom.
  11. Place pretzels in boiling water for 30 seconds, then transfer to baking sheets.
  12. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  13. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

For extra flavor, mix in optional garlic powder, oregano, or basil. Be sure to tightly seal the dough to prevent cheese leaks.
