Deliciously Savory Mini Croque Monsieur: A Bite-Sized Delight

A bite-sized twist on the classic French Croque Monsieur crispy, cheesy, and perfect for brunches, parties, or a cozy snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of white or whole-grain bread, crusts removed
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/4 cup finely chopped chives
  • Optional: 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon minced garlic

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and stir for 1-2 minutes to form a paste.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk, cooking until sauce thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  5. Spread a thin layer of sauce on each slice of bread.
  6. Top half the slices with ham and Gruyère cheese, then cover with the remaining slices, sauce side down.
  7. Cut each sandwich into quarters to form mini sandwiches.
  8. Place minis on baking sheet. Top with a little extra sauce and sprinkle with Parmesan if using.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
  10. For extra crispiness, broil for 1-2 minutes, watching closely.
  11. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use slightly stale bread for best results. You can substitute ham with sautéed mushrooms for a vegetarian version, or experiment with cheeses like gouda or mozzarella.
